Commonly called Irish Moss or Sea Moss (common gracilaria), —is a farmed species of red algae . In its fresh condition its soft and cartilaginous, varying in color from a brown-yellow, through red, to a dark purple or purplish-brown. The principal constituent is a mucilaginous body, made of the polysaccharide carrageenan, which constitutes 55% of its weight. The organism also consists of nearly 10% protein and about 15% mineral matter, and is rich in iodine and sulfur. When softened in water it has a sea-like odor and because of the abundant cell wall polysaccharides it will form a jelly when boiled, containing from 20 to 100 times its weight of water.

Moss has long been recognized for its ability to cure and abate the symptoms of colds and flu, thus the eating of moss forms an effective barrier to the ills of winter. Irish moss contains potassium chloride, this chemical helps to dissolve catarrhs, which are responsible for the congestion associated with chesty coughs, therefore, Irish moss provides a healthy natural alternative to the in many cases man made over the counter pharmaceutical cough and flu remedies.

Irish moss also contains several natural antimicrobial and anti viral agents which not only prevents colds and flu's, but moss is reported to eradicate a wide range of infections in sufferers, reducing valuable time lost to the ills we all encounter every day. The respiratory ailments Irish moss has been reported to alleviate include, sore throats, bronchitis and pneumonia, there are even reports that indicate Irish moss exhibited activity against tuberculosis.

Moss contains significant amounts of iodine, the thyroid gland exhibits a requirement for this ion, thus iodine is required for proper gland function, thus induce a change in the glandular system from disease to health. Iodine plays an important role in our ability to fight disease. Germs can gain access to the blood through cuts in the skin, through the nasal membranes and throat passages, or via the intestinal tract, or practically anywhere there is a rich supply blood close to an external surface. Iodine has a limited antimicrobial role, as blood circulates through the body it passes through the thyroid gland, iodine is secreted in to the blood stream through the thyroid, where it kills many of the weaker germs, whilst weakening some of the stronger germs.

Iodine also has other functions in the body, e.g. it aids in the release of tension, especially nervous tension, which enhances the overall sense of well being.

Due to the natural phof moss, this sea vegetables use in the relief and cure of bunions, the alkalinity of this wonderful herb is not attributed to sodium bicarbonate or potash, which are the major ingredients of many of the over the counter remedies. This fact has led to the use of moss in the relief of the rigors of the day after excessive alcohol consumption, i.e. the hangover, it replaces much of the ion content that is leached from the body as a consequence of the dehydrating effect attributed to the consumption of alcohol.

Calcium phosphate, and the phosphates of potassium, sodium and magnesium are required by the cells of the brain, liver, flesh and bones. Calcium phosphate salts form the major insoluble inorganic component of the bone, so intake of this salt can aid bone integrity and keep teeth strong and healthy.

Other ailments Irish moss is reported to be effective against, cancer and radiation poisoning (possibly because of the iodine content of Irish moss), it is an alternative, effective against halitosis, the formation varicose veins, inflammation, against dysentery and Irish moss has been applied as an emollient. As a gelatinous substance Irish moss has been used to treat peptic and duodenal ulcers and to inhibit arteriosclerosis and therefore, hypertension, it protects from fat and cholesterol build up. Irish moss has a well documented anticoagulant effect on the blood, and clears up many bladder complaints.

    By: Rob D Kongo

The method listed in these instructions is to prepare common gracilaria and eucheuma type seamoss.  Some species of seamoss will have to be treated a bit different as there are over several thousand species of seaweeds.  When preparing seamoss for consumption it is recommended to make what will be consumed for the next few days, don’t focus on long term storage but rather short term.  Remember the seamoss is a living single cell organism which was removed from the ocean and preserved with oxygen and other environmental naturally occurring gasses.

    1)    First step determine the dry quantity of seamoss to use, typically work with 1/2oz to 1oz at a time.

    2)    Rinse the dry seamoss in water and remove all debris if any, ensure the seamoss is rinsed well and clean.

    3)    Soak the seamoss (up to 3 hours) in distilled water or filtered tap using a vessel which will allow it to grow in size (seamoss can hold up to 50-90% of its weight in water) so don’t be afraid to use a larger size vessel.  Soak time is preference based.  Amount of water is roughly 4-8 cups depending amount of dry seamoss

    4)    After the seamoss has soaked transfer it to the blender with the water it soaked in. Blend the seamoss and water it soaked in until the consistency is smooth, velvety, and creamy.  If the texture is too thick you can add more water while blending.

    5)    Immediately transfer the blended seamoss into a glass container preferably and store with a lid in the refrigerator, eventually the seamoss will become more jelly like and solidified. One week max storage in fridge.

    6)    Can be added to daily smoothies, herbal teas, soups, and salads.  Can be used on the face as a facial mask and on skin as a protection.
