American Ginseng (panax quinquifolus) is truly the king herb! Native to the deciduous forests of  Eastern North America whose root is a treasured medicinal in East Asia. The harvest and trade of American ginseng has been a booming business for centuries. American ginseng is considered to be a stress reducer, energizer and normalize functions. The name panax comes from the Greek word panacea meaning, “all healing”.

It has been traditionally used to negate the effects of fatigue and stress. It’s often used as a general health tonic to enhance a person’s mental and physical performance. A true single tonic herb to tonify the entire body.

It’s a powerful “adaptogen”. An adaptogen is a substance that reduces the effects of any kind of stress, be it physical or mental. A natural balance created for what the bodies needs maybe.

Ginsenosides are the active constituents that may support healthy glucose levels, liver-aide and immunity support.

Roots must be at least four years old to be beneficial. The older the root, the more potent it is.  We use roots at least 10-25 years old.

American Ginseng Benefits:

Due to the variety of benefits American Ginseng, it’s one of the most widely used herbs in the world (Liu et al, 2016).

We’ll dig into its various benefits below:

1. May Improve Cognitive Function

A human clinical trial found that participants who took American Ginseng extract showed improved working memory, reaction time, and “calmness” (Scholey et al, 2010).

Animal studies show that Ginseng extract helped to improve learning and memory function in mice with Alzheimer-like syndrome (Shin et al, 2016).

Another animal study found that American Ginseng was superior to the benzodiazepine diazepam in reducing anxiety (Wei et al, 2007).

2. May Improve Heart Health

An animal study showed that American Ginseng helped to reduce the force at which the heart had to work, while at the same time maintaining the same blood pressure (Jiang et al, 2017).

Another study observed that a single dose of Ginseng extract depressed the cardiac contractile function in rats, resulting in a reduced heart rate maintained for the following 24 hours (Jian et al, 2014).

3. May Improve Blood Sugar

A human clinical trial showed that American Ginseng taken with a meal helped to reduce blood sugar spikes by ~20% in both no-diabetic and diabetic individuals (Vuksan et al, 2000).

An in vitro (i.e. “test tube”) study found that American Ginseng increased glucose uptake and insulin sensitivity, which in turn may reduce blood sugar levels (Kan et al, 2017).

An animal study found that Ginseng consumption worked to reduce oxidative stress in mice. This antioxidant effect is thought to be one of the mechanisms by which Ginseng works to support healthy blood sugar levels (Fu & Ji, 2003).

This was further proved out by in vitro research that showed that American Ginseng berry extract has antioxidant properties (Lin et al, 2008).

4. May Have Anti-Aging Properties

No controlled clinical trials have been done on the effect of ginseng on life expectancy.

That said, many studies show that Ginseng might have an effect on both the chronological and biological aspects of aging, due to its antioxidant properties (Szczuka et al, 2019)

5. May Have Antimicrobial Properties

Research shows that many of the different phytochemical compounds found in American Ginseng have antimicrobial properties.

One study, in particular, showed that ginsenosides (a compound found in Ginseng) possessed anti-staphylococcal activity. This study also noted that the leaves, roots, and hairy root cultures found in American Ginseng are all a source of antimicrobial compounds (Kochan et al, 2012).

6. May Have Anti-Cancer Activity

Ginsenoside Rh2 is one of the main compounds found in Ginseng root. This phytochemical has been found to exert a strong anti-tumor effect on colorectal cancer HCT116 cell line (Yang et al, 2016).
